Khadas Vim3L - Brian Beuken - 09-08-2019

I was hoping to get my hands on a Vim3 with the impressive A311D  but though they were kind to respond to my mail, they didn't send me a free example and as its over my $100 limit I couldn't buy it. It currently tips the scale at $99 but when you factor in a heatsink it tips it over...

But they have announced a half price Vim3L version with the S905 chip which they had originally intended to use, its missing a few other bits, but I probably wouldn't have used them anyway.
So I've preordered and will wait and see.

I've always liked the Vim2 I have, its quite a processing beast and actually emulates ES2 better than any other system I have, but like a lot of higher end boards it lacks access to the GPU, I suspect the same here but we will see when it arrives. It'll be a few months.

oops edit... no, the original Vim3 chip was a S922 which is/was a hexacore chip but they switched to the A311D and that also pushed the price up a bit. The S905 is the same quad core you find in the Odroid C2, a powerful chip for sure, better than the Pi3B but not as impressive as the S922... So this should be compared with the C2 and Pi3B in terms of performance, I suspect it will match the C2 but fall behind the 3B, we'll see when it arrives. But one thing, the C2 has a strong community behind it and I "think" it has GPU drivers, I need to dig mine out and update it to see. So it may actually be a more useful dev target than the full Vim3 is... time, as always will tell.

RE: Khadas Vim3L - Brian Beuken - 11-16-2019

Well my Vim3L has arrived, and since I also took the time to order a the heatsink and case I now have very nice little unit.
I also noticed this time that it has a slightly different S905 from the Odroid C2...a D3 model, which is rated a little faster...we'll see.

Of course currently there are no linux builds I can find, to try it out on,though coreELEC is available, but seems not for download yet. But thats ok, because I'm going to use this as an Android system (huh!!!)... It has Android 9 on board and in theory is capable of openGL3.1 . Its quite nippy in its native android, though there's really not much content to trail

yeah Android!!, not that I'm giving up on Linux, its just that I've been getted pressured to do more Android stuff with students and contract work, frankly I hate it.. So I'm going to experiment a bit. I don't have a modern Android phone and I don't plan to buy one, but I do have several, shall we say dissapointing boards where there were no GPU drivers to power any linux builds, but a lot of them did have Android, and android, as far as I know, always has GPU drivers.. So I will bite the bullet and have an experiment with using some of the lesser boards as Android systems and develop some nice frameworks to allow us to do "proper" coding even on Android.

But not for a while, as some may notice I've not been updating much, there's been a lot of work pressure and also some personal issues that have kept me away from my own coding efforts. I'm very busy clearing the decks on that and hope to come back fighting soon with new content, updates and fixes.

The VIM3 Pro looks interesting.  With the Armlogic A311D, it seems to sport a Mali-G52 ARM GPU and a VPU that supports 4K2K.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amlogic

- The GPU would be a 4-core Mali-G52 ARM with support for Vulkan 1.1, OpenGL 3.2 and OpenCL 2.2
- The VPU supports 4K2K@60 Hz with CEC, HDR and 4K decoding h.265, VP9 and AVS2

They seem to have a Linux repo but I am not sure if it is for the VIM3 or not.

Its the Vim3L though, just released so not even a section for it on their forums. Im sure they'll update soon.
The full Vim3Pro is a monster but just out of my price limit

RE: Khadas Vim3L - jomoengineer - 11-16-2019

Ah, yeah, that has a Amlogic S905D3-N0N with a Mali-G31 GPU.

Still, it supports:

- ARM G31 MP2 GPU up to 800MHz, OpenGL ES 3.2 Vulkan 1.0 and OpenCL 2.0
- Dolby Vision and HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and PRIME HDR video processing

Seems like it would be a nice system for a set-top box.

RE: Khadas Vim3L - Brian Beuken - 11-16-2019

yeah it seems nice, but I'll have to set it up as an Android Testbed till I get a stable linux for it... But online reviews show that the G31MP2 on here is hopelessly under performing, it really needed to be an MP4 or MP6 to get decent output... But its 3.2 will allow a fair amount of higher end content to be produced..

Im trying really hard to get some other issues in my life sorted out so I can spend more than 10 mins on these things...hopefully that will be in the next week or 2.
